Meet India’s first female sexologist- Dr. Sharmila Majumdar

India’s first female sexologist

Sexology is a science that focus on human sexual behaviors and human sexuality that helps in building relationships and locating sexual abnormality. It is an important field of science to study human nature and reproduction. But talking about this subject especially in the country like India seems to be bit odd, as sex is highly considered as a taboo that not many people like to talk about. It is ironic to know that a country who had ancient scriptures like Kamasutra who solely talk about sex and life, sexology was not a thing of debate before the early 20th century. Thanks to the American rom-coms that the idea of sex came among the Indian society. Thankfully, now people are coming out of the prejudice bubble of shame and accepting sex as a natural phenomenon. But it cannot be argued that India is completely taboo free. A large section of the country still lives in preconceptions. With its strong religious tendencies and widespread conservative ideology, talking about sex in public is a tough nut to crack. Among all this, a female is breaking all the stigma by becoming the India’s first female sexologist! Meet Dr. Sharmila Majumdar.

We all know that India is a highly conservative country but we also know that soon India will also become the rape capital of the world. With daily rape cases, minute by minute sexual harassment, it is extremely important for the parents to talk with their young kids about this topic, about the good touch and the bad touch. It is seen offensive to Indian values, and concerns that it might lead to risky sexual behavior and promiscuity. To build a strong foundation for sexual health in the country what can be done is obtaining information and attitudes, beliefs and values about one’s identity, relationships, and intimacy. Sex education will make the young more responsible and thus they will take the decision of having sex with full knowledge of the possible outcome instead of indulging in it out of curiosity and without any information thus bearing the careless aftermath. They will know about the precautions, will not feel judged buying contraceptives which is an important aspect and know about things like consent.

Learning about these topics and having sexologist to answer the doubts is very crucial in an age where India is being the second largest populated country in the world. And Dr. Sharmila Majumdar is one such women who without any fear is overcoming this stigma by being India’s first female sexologist. The team of The Indianness congratulates her and wish her luck for the future!
