The concept of reincarnation
The concept of reincarnation always seems to haunt us and surrounds mysteries of everlasting afterlife curiosities. Though many people believe in the authenticity of reincarnation, a lot does not seem to fathom the concept. The religious attributes and whether their religion believes so or not highly influence the people’s ideologies. While Hinduism talks about the concept of life, death, and rebirth, other religions have different beliefs about life after death. In Christianity, people don’t believe in reincarnation, they believe in the concept of completion and that human life is a period of preparation for the life after death or the life in heaven. The same goes with Islam, as they believe in ‘Akhirah’ and that they will remain in their graves till Yawm al-din, the Day of Judgment.
To understand the concept of reincarnation, it is important to know about souls. In every religion it is believed that a part of the human body be it mind, spirit or soul is eternal and does not die with bodily death, in fact, a soul defies the laws of death. It is the immaterial aspect or essence of a human being, that confers individuality and humanity or how we behave. In easy words, the soul is the part of you that will go to heaven and be immortal.
Reincarnation- What happens to you after death?
It is highly anticipated that the life after death is continued by your conscious which resides in your soul and that it travels through the walks of heaven or hell based on a person’s lifetime deeds. While many souls travel through the dimension to reach their ultimate destination, there are few who are reborn in a new body with no recollection of the memories from the past life. Whereas fewer are those who remember events about their previous life and what unfolds thereafter. Many such stories have been echoed throughout the years where people claimed to be reincarnated in their new bodies.
Those who worship Hinduism believe that death does not mark an end to a person’s life in fact their consciousness is reincarnated at least seven times. They follow their seven lives to ultimately attain the state of Moksha, which refers to the form of liberation from the cycle of life and death. It is the most important belief of Hinduism which revolves around four principles- dharma, artha, kama and Purusartha. A soul is destined to complete the cycle several times, learning new things in each life and working through its karma. This cycle of reincarnation is called samsara.
Salvation is a divine choice of the deliverance of the soul from sin and its consequences. It’s an ultimate stage of spirituality where a person no longer longs for worldly desires. The Bible declares a law which states “For the wages of sin is death” (biblical verse Romans 6:23). By all different religions, texts, cultures, or Atheism- death is the ultimate end of any living being. But death in a literal sense means the separation of the soul from the physical body. As said before, the soul never dies; only your physical being is damaged. And this separation is thus known as Salvation.
Reincarnation in Hinduism is not limited to being born as a human but in every living creature possible. It all depends upon your karma or the deeds you committed in your previous life. If you have done good deeds, your next life will be prosperous however if you were a sinner, chances are that your life might not be as great you wish it to be. The soul after death goes to heaven and once their karma is exhausted they return back to the mortal world to be reincarnated once more. It is important to know that despite the concept of seven births, there is absolutely nothing like an eternal and indestructible soul. Whatever is born is bound to die and meet their ultimate end.
Few Tales of Reincarnation
Shanti Devi was born in 1926, India, and barely spoke until the age of four. She later claimed that she was the wife to Pandit Kedarnath Chaube of Mathura and that she died after 10 days of giving birth. Later when people visited her husband and asked him about the claims, he was surprised that everything was true. He then visited Shanti and faked his name to that of his elder brother, but Shanti at once recognized him as her husband. She also chastised him for remarrying as he promised her to never marry again. Shanti recalled many more stories of her previous life which were all confirmed by Kedarnath Chaube. Later Gandhi Ji set up a committee of 15 people to fact check her claims, but astoundingly none was able to debunk her claim.
Ryan Hammons at the age of four started experiencing memories of his past life. He would often wake up at night holding his chest and screaming how his chest exploded in Hollywood. One day his mother was seeing a magazine where he recognized two people, one to be his friend George and another one as himself. He identified himself to be Martin Martyn. He also said he lived in the Hollywood lane by the house name Rock. He said he was a Hollywood agent in his past life. When his mother looked more into the details she found out the two men he recognized were correct. Upon seeing Martyn’s daughter, she confirmed his claims about his life and death. However, after meeting with the daughter, Ryan lost all his memories of his past life.
The story of Semih Tutusmus seems to be straight out of a crime thriller movie. When Semih’s mother was about to give birth she dreamed of a person named Selim Fesli with a bloody face. After growing up Semih claimed that his name is Selim Fesli and that he was murdered in the nearby village. The mother took him to that village where he met the Fesli’s widow. Together they recounted his past life and everyone confirmed that Fesli was shot by a neighbor. Later on, he would often visit the village to meet his wife and fully grown children.
Gus Taylor claimed to be his own grandfather. At first, his parents didn’t pay much heed to his claims but later when he recognized events of his grandfather’s life that very few knew, things started to change. He said his name was Augie and also identified his sister. This was very strange for the family, as he knew that his sister was murdered and her body was dumped in the ocean. Nobody has ever told Gus about this incident and it was strangely odd for everyone to realize that he knew everything.
