The Komal Chautala from ‘Chak De India’ just came alive with Asia’s Fastest Woman Rugby Player, Sweety Kumari. Hailing from a small village of Newada in Barh tehsil of Patna where girls are not even free to wear skirts or jeans, Sweety Kumari is breaking all the stereotypes by being an ace sprinter performing all the odds like a boss. Switching from sprinter to opting rugby, this young talent has managed to hail the title of the ‘continent’s fastest player’ by Asia Rugby. Sweety Kumari is indeed a word of multi-specialty! Thanks to Asia’s Rugby Women’s Championship that she managed to get a wide recognition from the leading world authorities, turning her into an overnight sensation. This is her story.

Sweety Kumari breaking stereotypes like a boss!

It was June 19, 2019, that changed Sweety’s fate completely. The 19-year-old explosive winger, Sweet Kumari caught the world Rugby’s attention and was soon placed on the heights. But how did her story began? She grew up in a close environment with five sisters and two brothers. Her father is a handyman whereas her mother is an Anganwadi worker. She was a regular girl who followed her brother’s footsteps into athletics and marked her sign onto the track in her early teen years. However, her brother soon quite the sport as it would take a lot of hard work, Sweety was determined to play. First, she ran for her school, then her district and later for the state, Sweet Kumari has finished the 100m in just 12 seconds in a track meet held in Patna. During an athletic meet in Siwan, Sweety the then 14 met Pankaj Kumar Jyoti the secretary of the Bihar Rugby Association, who introduced her into the world of rugby.

“Pankaj Sir told me that I had genuine speed, and convinced me that I would do really well in rugby. Although it doesn’t elicit major crowds today, the day isn’t far away when massive audiences will watch us play,” said Sweety in a report by The Better India.

At first, she didn’t know much about the sport, but later she single-handedly learned about it, formed her own team, enrolled in the state championship and within the course of the next three years she was already in the national under 17 team. Last year Sweety entered the senior national team. After playing several national tournaments, Sweety finally was recognized, following which she was picked up to represent India in the Youth Olympic Asia Qualifier match in Dubai 2017. One fun fact among all this was that her parents didn’t know their daughter was a star rugby player all this time! But when she was selected to go to Dubai, she needed a passport and at that moment for the first time, her parents got to know about her talent. When they asked here about Rugby, she swiftly replied that one day they will surely see her on the TV. It was her this confidence that made her family encourage her decision and support her choice.

At her first competition, Kumari was extremely nervous fearing the outcome of facing international players, however her seniors calmed her down. And one by one, step by step Sweety managed to get above all of them, learned how to dodge and when to step back mastering all the important techniques and created a situation that today she is been feared by most of the rugby player out there! She has been nicknamed as India’s Scoring Machine by her seniors and teammates when she performed outstandingly in her first-ever test match win against Singapore. Today, Sweety Kumari is an international name having a huge fan following in and around India and recognized as Asia’s Fastest Woman Rugby Player. She working to raise India’s game on the international level and making the world of sports accessible to the girls of her village.

Scrumqueen, a portal for rugby players wrote, “All of our nominees made a major impact on the game having started their careers at clubs or schools but only one began after forming her own team, but if anyone player can take her team to a higher level its Kumari.”

Since Sweety Kumari has made quite an impact on international sports, the State has started promoting rugby and is offering the job to skilled rugby players. However, Sweety is well aware that her real competition still awaits as she has only played against the competitors of her own continent, the challenge is when she’ll play against stronger competitors from around the world. But her exceptionally outstanding, incredible speed and powerful performance at Asia’s Rugby Women’s Championship had already made her the most promising talent India has witnessed in quite some time. She is indeed a rising star of India in the world of sports and the team of The Indianness hopes to see her cross miles ahead and make India proud wherever she goes!
