Sports has been deeply entrenched with Indian Culture. Almost from every city, every street and every nook and corner of the country, one can easily find true gems of sportsmen. Just like Hardik Pandaya or Yashasvi Jaiswal, recently we also witnessed Srinivas Gowda who amazed us by his incredible racing skills. Srinivas Gowda become an overnight sensation after his video went viral on internet running 100m in just 9.55 seconds! It was recorded during a traditional buffalo race in Karnataka. Citizens are comparing him with the world famous Usain Bolt and we couldn’t agree anymore! Who is Srinivas Gowda and how he become an online sensation? Let’s take a look at his story!
Srinivas Gowda recreating need for speed through Kambala!
Srinivas Gowda was invited for a track trial by Rijiju, Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Bengaluru, however he politely turned down the offer and said he would continue concentrating on Kambala. In a tweet by Kiren Rijiju says, “I’ll call Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI coaches. There’s lack of knowledge in masses abt standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I’ll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested.”
“In Kambala race, heels play an important role whereas it is toes in a track race. Not just jockeys, but even Buffaloes have a role to play in Kambala. In track race, this is not the case,” Srinivasa Gowda was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.
Kambala, an annual race held in Karnataka is where sportsmen sprint 142m through paddy fields with huge buffaloes running along with them! During the race, according to the traditions, the people running try to bring the buffaloes under their control by holding their reins and beating them again and again. This makes it clear that animals too plays a very crucial role achieving the timing. However the game was in a lot controversy following past few months as PETA filed a petition citing animal abuse. The ban was put on the sport but lifted out soon as many people sprint out the city streets demanding no ban. The 28 Year old Srinivasa Gowda is a construction worker from Moodabidri. He was interested in Kmabala racing since childhood and has been participating in the race form past seven years. The man only took just 13.62 seconds to run a distance of 145m at the Kambala at Aikala village near Mangaluru. After years practice he received the title of ‘Kambala Jockey’. Gowda has achieved 29 awards in 12 Kambala races. He received a widespread appreciation by several including Anand Mahindra, Randeep Hooda and many more prompting social media to compare him with the Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, whose 100m in 9.58 seconds is a world record created in 2009 at Berlin World Athletic Championship. So, this roughly translates that he completed 100m track 3 seconds faster than Bolt. But is comparing Gowda with Bolt technically correct? Well, this comparison technically isn’t right because the race Bolt did was among the humans however the Gowda race was with buffalos, thus the two races are totally different. Making a record among human counts more than the one with animals. May be this was the reason why Srinivasa Gowda himself cited that he should not be compared the Bolt. Apparently he was very humble on this comparison.
Following that Gowda cited, “People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field.”
The man became an online overnight sensation in Indian sports and was widely appreciated, who certainly gives credit to his buffaloes for the same. Following are few tweets commending the skills of the racer.
