India lacks fairly behind in the race of healthcare and hygiene. Sanitation and health are the major sectors bringing out some of the serious challenges for the country and yet people choose to stay silent. A lot have changed in past few decades but nothing makes a shift in the Indian beauty scenario. Do you know that the European countries or US that refrains from animal testing do so in India? There is also a lack of conscience and transparency in the beauty industry in India. And this why Shankar Prasad chose a unique way into the beauty industry. Where on one hand we have enormous startups yelling safe skincare products with a large section of varieties, PLUM chose to give only what is actually SAFE for us. His limited products are slowly setting their footsteps into the market.

This all started when Shankar Prasad went to abroad and explored a wide range or brands giving out some of the most promising products. And he was struck with the thought why India lacks behind? He was amazed how the foreign brands were giving quality products to the range of customers and decided on to create a brand in India as well where people have access to buy favorable products for themselves. Not into in beauty, the idea of PLUM was to focus more on skincare. With lot of research and a basic outline Shankar Prasad finally in July 2014, launched Pureplay Skin Sciences to give out some of the sustained products. Pureplay Skin Sciences is an online marketplace that allow users to shop for cosmetics and other beauty products. The biggest challenge for the company was how to make them standout in the crowd. With the help of quality products, material packaging, sourcing ingredients that too creatively proved to be a good deal to them. They followed all the safety procedures while refusing to use any synthetic ingredient, Plum started growing gradually. The idea was not to make people beautiful but to feel beautiful. They believe that all of us are the best version of ourselves and there’s no need to change what we have, the only thing we need is to manage and take care of what we got. Therefore, the company promotes no false promises or over packaging. As of today, the company have two categories- Plum and Phy. Plum caters women’s interest having around 60 products and Phy is for men having 12 products including mostly skincare, cosmetics and sanitation. They received their first funding in the year 2018 by Unilever Venture Capital. The company has expanded its retail distribution to over 70 cities in India. They plans on to launch some 8-10 more products in the next few months such as shaving and haircare. And as per the company’s director, Phy also plans to open offline stores as well.

Having a bootstrapped image and promising products- Pureplay aspires on becoming an international brand. Shankar’s vision to provide a better, safe and vegan products have made their way up to the place where they are no doubt becoming customer’s preference. This IIT Bombay graduate man today has catered a safe space in the country’s beauty domain.
