Young Environmentalist saving Mumbai- Sagar Singh!
Dirty piles of wrappers over the streets, tin cans and plastics on the beaches and growing menace of pollution inside forest- we have been harassing our environment like no one else. Sigh of disappointment, rallies for and against, cursing people around exsectra, are all the things that we all been doing so far. Not many people, though, take up the responsibilities over their own shoulder to do the job, but that can’t be summarized for everyone? Is it? Stories and legends are not made when you do something extraordinary or out of the blue, instead stories are remembered when you do what is needed to be done at the moment. And just like this the world is definitely going to remember the story of Sagar Singh, who had and is been doing a tremendous job towards saving our environment by nothing but just love. This is his story.
Sagar Singh planting trees to save Mumbai
The journey of a young Social Science teacher and Environmentalist Sagar Singh didn’t started that easily. Sagar Singh has been an environment lover since childhood. He had spent days hugging trees, planting green and cherishing whatever the nature has provided to us. Spending his days seeing sunrise and eve’s adoring beaches, Sagar Singh has his own way to love what he wants.
One fine day after completing his busy schedule of 8 hours of teaching, the young man like every day went over the beach to relax his mind and soul. It is not that he hasn’t seen dirt piles around before, it’s just that he happened to join the que of sighing people over the scene. Every day after serving his job, he spend his eve on the beach thinking about how people are destroying their own environment by littering here and there, and this thought was magnifying by each day. Daily going back to his house with tons of thoughts inside his head, Sagar was frustrated, depressed, concerned and decided to do something about it! He shared this thought among his fellow friends and together they joined hands to create a new drive in Mumbai to save the Mother Nature. And this idea initiated beach clean ups, people formed a community ‘Eco Warriors India’ who will be cleaning beaches each weekend at Mumbai.
It was a change that Sagar always wanted to create but didn’t had any mean to do so. But this time, things are different, he educated his students about the importance of climate and dwelled the love for the same within their hearts. He believes that it is extremely important for the kids to learn about the importance of our natural resources so that they do not continue repeating the same mistake we had done so far. For promoting the same thought, he even conducted several workshops in different schools and colleges. In October, 2019, the BMC announced that they would cut down around 2,500 trees in the Aarey forest of Mumbai for a metro car shed project. Aarey forest is something which is referred to as the ‘Lungs of Mumbai’! This was a time when Sagar along with several other environmentalist stand against them and even filed a petition in the court. According to Mumbai Government, they said that the idea of chopping down trees is because of the over population in the city. Many people travel every day in local trains of Mumbai and die due to falling or dying because people would come into the local train and push each other. To cut down this chaos, the metro car shed project has been implemented. But this reason wasn’t something that could justify the deforestation in the area, as Sagar stated that there is an option to build the metro car shed in the separate area. They don’t have any problem with the metro project instead they have an issue where the government is trying to build metro car shed. Thus Sagar together with others did several protest and rallies, though their efforts didn’t paid off, as the government cut down the trees in secrecy, and detained Sagar alongside other protestors. However, Sagar Singh has no regrets as he said he fought for what is right to protect.
Sagar now has collaborated with a Youtuber Saiman says and Mission Green Mumbai to plant thousands of trees across Mumbai. Together they had formed ‘TreeSena’ who had already started planting trees since January this year, starting from a point known as ‘Chota Kashmir’ which is located inside the Aarey forest. The aim of TreeSena is to plant almost 4000 and above trees in every street of Mumbai so that they can do their bit towards making the world greener and better.
What happens if the entire Aarey Forest is chopped off? Basically cutting down trees means interrupting the water cycle. The rainfall in the region may become adverse and it will make Mumbai a flood prone area. So, directly or indirectly, the project is going to affect the locals in the end. The initiative started by Sagar Singh and Saiman is definitely going to make an impact in the coming future. Just like them it is also our responsibility to support this noble cause, if not by money than of course by doing the same wherever you live. The team of The Indianness wishes Sagar and his initiative to reach the highest level of success.
