What’s with Fraud gurus and blind faith culture?

Who are these Gurus who claims to guide people the right direction?

Gurus are the people who are recognized as having exceptional degree of holiness and closeness to god. According to the Vedas, these people are known as “Srotriya Bramha nistham” which means a true leader. Baba’s, gurus or godmen can be found at every length and breadth of India. Guru’s such as Kabirdas, Guru Nanak and others gave a meaning to the lives of people. Through their teachings and experiences they helped people cope up with their daily life troubles. They worked for the betterment of society, unlike the godmen these days. The godmen’s today do not have any motive of serving humanity rather they prefer living in sparkling ashrams, having tons of property and a range of blind followers who spend thousands of rupees without a second thought. Underneath all the talk of spirituality and promises of well-being lies an ominous sinister where gloomy dealings, sexual assault, land grabbing, murders, kidnappings and other nefarious activities takes place. But unfortunately, for their blind followers, these gurus are saintly figures who can do no wrong to the society.

Few Gurus who indulged in unlawful activities:

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh:

The chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Ram Rahim is the latest in the list. He has a huge blind following and had been indulged in several unlawful activities. On August 25, 2017, he was convicted by a CBI court for raping one of his female follower in 2002. The same year, charges were also leveled against Ram Rahim for the murder of a journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, and Ranjit Singh, the manager of Dera Sacha Sauda. Just after the verdict, Ram Rahim’s followers resorted to violent protests in which over 30 people were killed and around 80 injured. He is also facing prosecution for other murders and ordering forced castrations.

Asaram Bapu:

A very well-known godmen, Asaram has stayed in controversy for a long time. The baba has 400 asaharams located in and around India and has a massive range of followers. He was first accused in 2013, for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. Asaram, along with his son, is also accused of killing two boys in 2008. He has also been subjected to backlash on his controversial statement in Nirbhaya’s case, where he condemned that she was equally responsible for the rape as she should have said the men her brothers and should pleaded them to stop. He is also involved in a land grabbing case.

Nirmal Baba:

Nirmal Baba discourses are broadcast on multiple television channels in the country & several other places. Nirmal Darbar is a televised show of his for the public meeting of Baba where he addresses his followers and communicates with them. He was too accused of several crimes and has allegedly blamed for spreading superstitions across the country. In 2014, Nirmal Baba was charged with evading service tax to the tune of Rs. 3.5 crore.

Do you know about Kailaasa?

Now this godmenship has gone to next level with Swami Nithyananda. Do you remember him? Yes, the same guru who was charged with rape allegations and flew away somewhere near October in 2018. Now the news suggest that Godman Nithyananda has reportedly set up his own country! Named ‘Kailaasa’ it’s a private island, which Nithyananda allegedly bought from Ecuador, a country on South America’s west coast, near Trinidad and Tobago. The country even got his own website which states that it’s a nation without border created only for disposed Hindus. Hindus from around the world can come here and practice Hinduism authentically in this new country. Nithyananda even got his own personalized passports and even a flag! Now, this something really uncommon in the modern world.

So why do these fake godmen’s has such a huge fan following?

Babas in India are the smooth talkers who do sly tricks to impress its audience by magic. These people believe these tricks and term them as powerful and mystical. These blind followers spend tons of money in the form of charity and well-being of the ashram. They oblige these gurus blindly as they believe they will solace their sufferings and sorrows. And it’s not the game with uneducated sector of the society, even the most educated also fells prey to these fake saints. People who are socially and economically stable too does everything they have been asked to do. Even if the baba says that stop eating red sauce, these people will blindly follow that! So you see even the slightest of things these godmen say turns out to be a duty for the followers. And this was the main reason why such riots and violence took place in the state during the time of Ram Rahim arrest. People are so much tempted and embroiled with these gurus that even if their crime is proved, we still choose not to believe it.
